Hoary comma butterfly (Polygonia gracilis), Curecanti National Recreation Area, 2015.
The most recognizable feature of this butterfly is probably the distinctive, ragged wing edge. The upper sides of the wings are dark red-orange with dark borders and the underside is a darker gray-brown. In the afternoons, males will perch on plants in valley bottoms looking for females.
