Acorn woodpecker, Pinnacles National Park, 2014.
Acorn woodpeckers (Melanerpes formicivorus) rely heavily on acorns for food. In some parts of their range they create granaries or 'acorn trees' by drilling holes into trees or buildings which they will fill with acorns. The woodpeckers collect acorns that fit exactly into the holes. As the acorns dry out, the woodpeckers move the acorns to smaller holes! Granary maintainance requires a significant amount of the bird's time. In the meantime, the woodpecker will also feed on insects, sap and fruit.
