The Tar Gap Prescribed Fire was ignited in October of 2002, and totalled 1,209 acres burned in short-needle mixed coniferous forest with a large component of giant sequoia and mature chaparral. Primary objectives were to reduce hazardous fuels and to restore fire to its natural role within the ecosystem. Firing was done with hand ignition using primarily a spot ignition pattern. These photos were captured by SEKI fire monitoring crew and show smoke patterns and air quality conditions during the burn.
