Eastern box turtle (Tarrapene carolina carolina), Catoctin Mountain Park, 2014.
The eastern box turtle is one of six subspecies of the common box turtle (Terrapene carolina), though only two of these subspecies are found in the United States. These slow crawlers are extremely long lived, slow to mature and have few offspring per year. These characteristics make the box turtle - and other species who share these characteristics - particularly susceptible to anthropogenic (i.e., human-caused) mortality.
