Gray wolf (Canis lupus) in the snow, Voyageurs National Park, 2015.
The gray wolf, or timber wolf, is a canid native to the wilderness of North America and Eurasia. It is the largest extant member of its family. There are about 6-8 wolf packs with a total of 35-45 wolves in the park. Lone wolves, like this one, make up about 15% of the total park population. They live a feast-and-famine lifestyle and may go days without food. When they do eat, they can digest up to 22 pounds of food at one time, though can survive on 5-6 lbs of meat per day.
