2019 El Capitan Horse Tail Falls rock fall

A close perspective of a rock fall source area.

A rock fall from the Southeast face of El Capitan near Horsetail Fall, resulting in loud rock fall sounds and dust cloud. The source area for this rock fall was from within the scar of the 28 September 2017 rock fall. A tall, thin flake, positioned within the earlier scar and on the western side of the new dihedral corner, fell in one event. As the flake was large but relatively thin, it broke up almost completely on impact at the base of the cliff, producing a relatively large dust cloud but limited the depositional extent to the upper part of the talus slope.
