Longfellow House - Washington's Headquarters National Historic Site
Japanese bronze workers of the Edo (1615-1868) and Meiji (1868-1912) periods were craftsmen of the highest order. They produced works ranging from intricate personal incense burners to monumental religious sculptures. Charley purchased many decorative bronzes during his stay in Japan. He wrote to his sister Annie, that he “couldn’t resist the temptation” of the bronze shops in Osaka.
