‘Ulu maika or gaming stones are thick circular rock disks used to play the game of the same name. The game is similar to bowling, where the player rolls the ‘ulu maika through two poles without striking them. This game is still played today as part of the Makahiki festival. Originally the game was played with disks of breadfruit (‘ulu), which is where the game got its name from.
