Denali National Park and Preserve
The Denali National Park and Preserve road (referred to as the Denali Park Road) runs west from the George Parks Highway (Alaska Route 3, connecting Fairbanks and Anchorage), 92 miles into the interior of Denali National Park and Preserve to the Kantishna Historic Mining District. The road consists of a two-lane paved road for the first fifteen miles to the Savage River. From this point the road is no longer paved and widths vary. At the Savage River, personal vehicles are limited and the majority of vehicles on the road are tour and transit buses in summer. Starting at the Teklanika River, the road dramatically cuts across the slopes of Polychrome Mountain and Thorofare Pass, providing spectacular views of the Alaska Range, Muldrow Glacier, and Mount McKinley. The primary experience of the majority of visitors to the park is based from the Denali Park Road on a tour or shuttle bus.
