Album: Boxwork

Jewel Cave National Monument

Photos of boxwork in Jewel Cave. While nearby Wind Cave is particularly known for boxwork, Jewel Cave exhibits a relatively small amount. Boxwork forms when fractures in the rock become filled with a harder material more resistant to erosion or dissolution. Later, the softer surrounding rock is removed, leaving protruding 'box-like' formations.
