Album: National Archives for Black Women's History, National Council of Negro Women, Organizational and Annual Meetings, Series 02

Mary McLeod Bethune Council House National Historic Site

Series 02 ORGANIZATIONAL AND ANNUAL MEETINGS provides documentation on the formation of the NCNW and the national meetings of the organization. In addition to the business meeting, which formulated organizational policy, each convention usually included speeches by notable people and/or workshops centered around subjects such as employment. Annual meetings usually included a social event, such as International Night, or a reception at the White House. Many conventions focused on special themes, such as the Interracial Conference in 1957, and frequently drew participants from outside NCNW. Material included in this series are as follows: correspondence, speeches, reports, resolutions, programs, press releases, invitations, registration lists, etc. All types may not be available for all meetings. This series is arranged chronologically by year and then by format. There is related material in many of the other series. The numbering of folders in the National Council of Negro Women Records collection was inconsistent -- in some series folders were numbered sequentially for the entire series (as should be the case); in others folders were numbered sequentially within each box, and numbering started over with folder number 1 in the next box. The folders in the NCNW Records have been renumbered so that the logical organization of the collection is not tied to its physical storage arrangement. The Legacy No. listing refers to the previous numbering in order to maintain backward compatibility with previous research references.
