Stalagmites in Jewel Cave. Stalagmites are formed as water containing calcium carbonate from dissolved limestone drips from the ceiling and accumulates on the floor. The difference between stala(g)mites and stala(c)tites can be remembered by 'g' for ground, and 'c' for ceiling.
