Ellis Island National Monument
The Space Shuttle Enterprise was built by NASA in 1976, as part of the shuttle program to test flights in the atmosphere. Built as a full- scale prototype, it was never retrofitted with engines and never flew in space. After completing an international tour, Enterprise was retired in November 1985 and placed on display at the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum. In April of 2011 the Space Shuttle Discovery, which is the most traveled orbiter, was retired and placed on display in Washington D.C. Enterprise was transferred to the possession of the Intrepid Sea, Air, Space Museum, in New York City, in December 2011. On April 27, 2012, Enterprise, attached to a NASA 747, flew around New York Harbor before landing at JFK Airport. Over the course of a few days in early June 2012, a barge carried the Space Shuttle Enterprise from JKF to the Intrepid Museum, passing by the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. #OV101 #SpottheShuttle
