The historical significance of the Bucktown General store is that not only is the one of the oldest general stores in the United States, but it is believed to be the site where Harriet Tubman was struck by an overseer with two-pound weight between 1834-1836, causing her lifelong epilepsy. The general store is located in Bucktown, Maryland near the Transquaking River. The current small, one-story store was built after Tubman’s life changing incident between 1860-1870 and operates as museum for the Harriet Tubman Byway project.
