My dear Miss Longfellow;
Have finished & send to-day the small Christmas gift which I began for you so many weeks ago, but on account of my school work, was prevented from finishing it at the time I wished. But it carries with it, just as much grateful love and my best wishes for very Happy New year to you.
Am also happy to tell you that I grad [p. 2] uated to-day with my class. Would have sent you an invitation to attend the exercises; the exercises were very simple, we even had no singing. Which were had so, because of the recent death of one of our teachers. And thought you would not enjoy the exercises.
Want to thank you, Miss Longfellow, for your very kind interest which you have taken in me since I have been here. And it has been largely through the inspiration of your influence that encouraged & enabled me [p. 3] to win that honor. Only hope I shall be able to fulfill all that teachers are required and have planned to do.
The school has been closed a week earlier than was planned. On account of the prevailing “influenza” complaints and the death of our teacher. Although the Senior Class will attend school a week longer, with Miss Hyde in Methods, as we lost good deal in the study during the long period of her illness.
Shall be here a month too after school begins [p. 4] next term, to take special course in English and to be in Practice School to observe and get all the help I can to better prepare for work among my people.
Trust I have not been a burden to you too much by writing so freely, but write so because you have been so kind and done so much me for me and my race, more than I can ever repay.
