Back of a carte-de-visite. Front shows a young girl at three-quarter view to her right. Hair worn in curled bangs over forehead and the rest pulled away from face. High lace collar. Bust-length portrait. Inscription: "Lilian [sic] Mc Dowell." written in ink by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow upper verso. Photographer's imprint verso includes "H.G. Smith, / Studio Building. / Boston." Notes: C1875-C1880 because of apparent age of subject (b. C1871). Her mother Katherine Sherwood Bonner MacDowell corresponded with Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and helped him with "Poems of Places" (see Wagenknecht, Longfellow, Full-Length Portrait, pp. 280-3.)
