Philada 15th May1798
I had the Pleasure of my dear Lucia Diary of the 5th May by yesterdays mail. This weekly Communication from my Children is a happiness I am looking out for betimes; & it is the more pleasing as ^it seems to be written with so little Inconveni-ence to them – nay why may I not be free & say at once ^so much – Pleasure – or tho they thot at the time of writing that they were giving their Papa a very great Pleasure with which they themselves were also pleased. – That this is the Pleasure of Pleasing - (p. 2) I have not yet heard of John and Eliza Arrival at Boston – am in daily hopes of it – Ask your Mama to read her Childrens Letters instead of One to her^self particularly – A fire just by, last Night occasion’d me to sleep till & 8 or 9 this morng - that, & Company prevents writing to her - & then a Miss every once in a while will make a variety – if one writes every Mail, it will be a thing of Course – however, that is not my reason – there were Several Buildings & about a dozen Houses lost in the fire last Night It was cry’d about 11 OClock, just as I had got to Bed. It was so near, that contrary to my custom. I turned out -
