Frances (Appleton) Longfellow to Nathan Appleton, January 1859
Manuscript letter
Cambridge
Wednesday.
Dear papa
I return you Mrs Bent’s letter with its interesting details of Aunt Everett’s last hours.
How odd it must seem to you to be the last survivor of such a large family, living so many years within hearing, if not within sight, of each other! A very rare thing it is for so many to journey together so far, & melancholy as it must be to you, dearest papa, to find yourself without their companionship, still [p. 2] it must be pleasant to recall the long Past, and to feel that the old home is not far removed.
I regret very much not to have been able to visit Aunt Everett of late years, but I have a very distinct remembrance of her appearance, of the dignity & kindness with which she impressed me as a child.
We truly sympathise with you, dear father, in the sad thoughts this loss must awaken, & wish, by our devoted love, we could, in any way or measure, make it up to you.
Yr affectionate
Fanny.
