Frances (Appleton) Longfellow to Anne Longfellow Pierce, 16 August 1845
Manuscript letter
Brattleboro’. Saturday.
Dear Annie,
We leave here on Tuesday, & intend to pass that night at Northampton, & the next at Boston; where I shall probably feel inclined to rest until the afternoon of Thursday – so that you may look for us by the afternoon train. I am very glad we are able to secure this little visit to Portland before Commencement, for Henry’s time has been so short here that I could hardly advise him to resign a day of his liberty, but he thinks he could not gain enough in those few days to make it worth while to deprive you of a visit. He feels much [p. 2] better, & longs to have months at his disposal to complete his restoration. Sam does not seem to take to it very kindly as yet, as few new patients do, but I doubt not will in a few days, find himself invigorated, & his appetite excited to the true hydropath pitch.
My brother Tom is also with us & we explore the lovely drives in all directions. He is full of foreign adventures, which will last us a long time for entertainment at Craigie Castle.
Aunt Nancy promises you a letter by me. I am more & more pleased with her naturalness & freshness. My back is not very strong today, having had a fatiguing drive yesterday, so you [p. 3] must excuse this short note.
Many thanks to Mary for hers’.
ever thine
Fanny L –
