Peleg Wadsworth to Lucia Wadsworth, 20 December 1800
Manuscript letter
City of Washington 20th Decr1800 My dear Lucia’s Letter of 6th & 7th Decr. was last Eveng receiv’d. I had long been wishing & expecting it; but did not impute her silence to neglect. I had more charity. I know her Solicitude for her Sister & her attentions to her – besides I had heard that she was quite sick ^herself. I am therefore doubly rejoiced to have it from under her own hand that She is so far recovered as to take her Station below stairs in assisting her Mama. Eer this you have Dr* Spence’s communi-cation respecting Eliza’s Case. This Dr Spence I take to be the Same physician your Mama refer’d to in yours. I expected to have receiv’d some of his Pills eer this, as he suggested, but have not yet. I shall write him again soon if I hear no farther from him. I am also expecting Dr Irvings Statement of her case, in order to consult further with Dr Spence. I presume his ^Dr Spence’s Advice will be made as extensively useful as possible. *Dr Spence was the Author of a Famous Publication on Fox Gloree in the Alexandria Paper ^of last summer (p. 2) Your wish, my Dear, tho not express’d, is easily conceived – my thots too, perhaps had better not be express’d – I pray God to preserve all my dear Children! – I hope to see them all in a little more than two Months in the mean time will do all in my power for their Comfort. Mr Reed, my fellow Boarder, is an enthu-siast in favour of a Ceton[sic] in ^the (Eliza’s) side + this coin^csides with Dr Spence’s Advice. Perhaps It will be try’d. It would supersede the repetition of Blisters & perhaps be less painful & more useful. I notice the Attention of your Neighbours – particularly Miss Eleanor C & Mr L & W – I know they are all good, humane & tender – nor are they the only Ones – Eliza’s goodness makes her many Friends I trust she has One Friend, who will never fail her!
(p. 3) Mr Thatcher has been under great anxiety for his Wife & Son – but is happily reliev’d by favourable Accounts from both – With much Love & solicitude for you All – Adieu P Wadsworth
