Alt Text Map of Cuyahoga Valley National Park in Ohio. The long, roughly teardrop-shaped park is shown in light green and surrounding areas in tan. Roads are mostly shown as white lines, and a byway through the park is yellow. Extended Description The Boston Mill Visitor Center is about halfway down the park, and sites are relatively evenly spaced along the park’s height. This description will start at the top and work south through the park before moving to the surrounding areas and fully transcribing the legend. The Ohio & Erie Canalway, America’s Byway, is a route shown in yellow that travels through the park and off both the top and bottom edges of the map. It enters the map near the top left corner alongside the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad, the Cuyahoga River, and the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail (for biking and hiking), which is shown as a bold orange dashed line. Text here indicates that both the Towpath Trail and Byway continue north “To Cleveland.” The Leonard Krieger CanalWay Center is just under the top edge of the map in this area. The Byway and towpath pass Bacci Park operated by the Village of Cuyahoga Heights; and Ohio & Erie Canal Reservation, which is operated by Cleveland Metroparks, before arriving in the park. Orange dots within the park represent trailheads and badges made up of red circles with yellow wings represent boarding stations for the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad. The Byway follows Canal Road from the top edge of the map down into the park. It passes Lock 39, which has a trailhead and picnic area; Rockside Station, which has restrooms and a boarding station; Oxbow Orchard; Canal Exploration Center, which has information, a boarding station, and a picnic area; Canal Corners Farm & Market; and Terra Vista Natural Study Area. Here Tinkers Creek Road branches off of Canal Road to head east, through a short, projecting arm of the park, and into Tinkers Creek Gorge, which is shaded cool, spruce green, indicating it is Metropark and Metro Park land inside the NPS boundary. Tinkers Creek Road becomes Button Road and ends a short distance into the gorge at a site with restrooms and a picnic area. Near where Tinkers Creek Road becomes Button Road, Gorge Parkway winds eastward through this area to access two picnic areas, an Overlook, Bridal Veil Falls, Lost Meadows with a reservable picnic shelter, Bedford Reservation (Cleveland Metroparks), a ranger station and Shawnee Hills Golf Course. A third picnic area, Viaduct Park, and Great Falls are found on the north side of Tinkers Creek and can be accessed via a short road branching off State Route 14. Back on the Byway, Canal Road and the Towpath Trail pass Fitzwater trailhead, Alexander’s Mill (Wilson’s Mill), and a trailhead at Frazee House (building closed), which has restrooms, before the Byway shifts to Valley View Road and then Chaffee Road. The Byway turns west, crossing to the western side of the Cuyahoga River, and then south at Brecksville boarding station as Riverview Road, which it follows for the remaining two-thirds of the park. Chippewa Creek Drive branches west from the railroad in this area to access Brecksville Reservation (Cleveland Metroparks). This bulb-shaped, spruce-green area has Brecksville Nature Center, which has a picnic area; an Overlook; four additional picnic areas arranged around an irregular loop road; a ranger station; Sleepy Hollow Golf Course; Squire Rich Historical Museum; Deer Lick Cave; and Brecksville Stables, which has restrooms. Once again on the Byway, Riverview Road continues south past Spice Acres and National Park Service Administrative Headquarters in Jaite. Red Lock, which has restrooms, can be reached via east-bound Highland Road from Jaite. Another spur off that road leads south to Brandywine Ski Resort. Still traveling south, Riverview Road passes Coonrad, which has a ranger station, and Boston Mills Ski Resort before crossing under Interstate 271, which curves gently across the park. Several sites are clustered around the town of Boston near this intersection, including the Boston Mill Visitor Center; a boarding station; a site marked Trail Mix, which has refreshments; a trailhead; and Boston Store and MD Garage. Interstate 271 passes Stanford House, which has lodging; Brandywine Falls, which has a trailhead, restrooms and a picnic area; and Inn at Brandywine Falls, which has lodging, at the eastern border of the park. An access road traveling west from the visitor center leads to Blue Hen Falls and a trailhead. To the west of the Boston Mill Visitor Center area is Furnace Run, operated by Summit Metro Parks, which includes Daffodil and Brushwood Lake with a reservable picnic shelter, picnic area, and restrooms. Continuing south, the Byway passes Lock 29, with a trailhead and restrooms; the Peninsula Depot boarding station; and Trail Mix with information. The cross street here, State Route 303, leads past Pine Lane trailhead, which has restrooms, refreshments, Trapp Family Farm, a picnic area with a trailhead, Happy Days Lodge (which also has a picnic area), and an additional trailhead at the easternmost end of the park. Akron Peninsula Road runs parallel to the Byway, railroad tracks, and trail, and on the east side of marshland. Four roads branch east from Akron Peninsula Road to various park sites. The first is Truxell Road, which has spurs that lead to Kendall Lake with a trailhead, restrooms, and a picnic area; Octagon with a trailhead, restrooms, a picnic area, and reservable picnic shelter; and Ledges with a trailhead, restrooms, a picnic area, and reservable picnic shelter. Just south of this, Quick Road travels east to Pine Hollow, which has restrooms, a picnic area, and trailhead; Crow Foot Gully trailhead; Little Meadow trailhead; and Armington Pond, which has a Countryside Initiative farm nearby. Finally, Wetmore Road accesses Wetmore, which has restrooms and a trailhead. Shifting back north, Major Road branches west off Riverview Road south of State Route 303 to travel past Horseshoe Pond, which has restrooms, a picnic shelter (reservation not needed), and trailhead; and Greenfield Berry Farm before turning south as Oak Hill Road. That leads to Oak Hill, which has restrooms, a picnic area, and trailhead, and then Cuyahoga Valley Environmental Education Center. Deep Lock Quarry, operated by Summit Metro Parks, is south of Peninsula, along Riverview Road. Farther south, Everett Road leads west to a trailhead and restrooms, the Everett Covered Bridge. A ranger station is on Riverview Road across from Everett Road. Akron Peninsula Road travels south by Goatfeathers Point Farm before Bolanz Road connects Akron Peninsula Road to Riverview Road to the west and accesses Hunt House, which has information, a picnic area, restrooms (open seasonally), and a trailhead. Beaver Marsh is south of Bolanz Road, and Blossom Music Center and Porthouse Theatre are to the southeast. Continuing south on Riverview Road from Bolanz Road are Indigo Lake boarding station, which has restrooms; Howe Meadow; Beaver Marsh; Ira, which has a picnic area and restrooms; and Conrad Botzum Farmstead. The crossroads Everett Road and Ira Road lead to Hale Farm & Village, east of Riverview Road. The next Riverview Road crossroad to the south, Bath Road, leads west to sage-green O’Neil Woods (Summit Metro Parks) with a trailhead, picnic area, and restrooms; and east past Heronry Wayside to sage-green Hampton Hills (also Summit Metro Parks), which has two trailheads, a picnic area, and restrooms. Netenbach Farms and Sarah’s Vineyard lie in the main park area just north of Hampton Hills. The last leg of the Byway in the main park travels past Botzum boarding station, which has a picnic area, restrooms, and a trailhead, before exiting the park. Riverview Road continues south to pass the faint-green F.A. Seiberling Nature Realm (Summit Metro Parks), which has a Visitor Center with a picnic area. The Byway becomes Merriman Road and travels through faint-green Cascade Valley (Summit Metro Parks) and Sand Run (also Summit Metro Parks) before becoming Memorial Parkway and entering Akron, then passing Mustill Store and the Akron Northside boarding station, which has restrooms. Gorge (Summit Metro Parks) is north of Akron and east of Cascade Valley and Sand Run along the Cuyahoga River. An all-purpose Bike & Hike Trail is represented with orange, thin dashed lines. It winds through Tinkers Creek Gorge and south to parallel the Byway on or just beyond the eastern edge of the park until it flares southeast and off the map past Ledges. All the roads are named, and together they form create a loose grid across the map. Interstate 480 runs across the top of the map, north of Cuyahoga Valley National Park, and Interstate 80 travels east-west across the park just south of the Boston Mill Visitor Center. Interstate 77 travels north-south to the west of the park and the joint Interstates 480 and 271 lies to the east. Interstates 480 and 271 split northeast of Tinkers Creek Gorge; 271 heads north to Cleveland and 480 heads west, cutting through Bacci Park to the north and Ohio & Erie Canal Reservation to the south. Legend A scale in the lower left corner of the map measures distances of 0.5 and 1 kilometers and 0.5 and 1 miles. Text next to the scale reads, “Private Property: Some land within the park remains private property; please respect the owners’ rights.” The legend reads as follows: Light green for NPS land, Light teal for Metropark and Metro Park land inside NPS boundary, Faint green for Metropark and Metro Park land outside NPS boundary, Green dot for Countryside Initiative farm, Logo with a red circle and wings for Boarding station for Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad, Yellow line with black casing for Ohio & Erie Canalway America’s Byway, Gray number for Road exit number, Orange dot with black casing for Trailhead, Orange bold dashed line for Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail (biking and hiking), Orange thin dashed line for Other biking and hiking trail, and Gray dotted line for Other trail. A column of symbols represents Ranger station, Restrooms, Refreshments, Picnic area, and Reservable picnic shelter.
