Alt Text Map of Yosemite Valley in Yosemite National Park, California. Dozens of roads, shuttle routes, trails, creeks, waterfalls, sites, and features are labeled across the pearl-white topography. Extended Description The main roads, Northside Drive and Southside Drive, are represented with dark brown lines that run closely together from the west, and then up and over in a low arch that crosses about three quarters of the map. Shuttle lines, indicated in pink and green, overlap and connect these main roads. This description will begin with the sites along Southside Drive from west to east to follow the flow of one-way traffic, and then return from east to west along Northside Drive. The shuttle lines will follow, and then the surrounding areas before a full transcription of the legend. Along Southside Drive Southside Drive begins where El Portal Road splits into two at Pohono Bridge, where Southside Drive crosses the Merced River . Southside continues east to its intersection with Wawona Road, which travels back westward toward the edge of the map. Text near the western end of Wawona Road off the map near the bottom left corner reads, "To Glacier Point, Wawona and Mariposa Grove; Highway 41, Oakhurst, and Fresno.” Wawona Road passes restrooms and Tunnel View before reaching the map’s edge. Past this intersection, Southside Drive passes Bridalveil Fall and Cathedral Rocks before arriving at Cathedral Beach, which has restrooms and picnic areas. It then passes Sentinel Beach, with restrooms and picnic areas; the Trailhead for Four Mile Trail; Swinging Bridge, also with restrooms and picnic areas; a chapel; and Sentinel Bridge before passing Yosemite Valley Welcome Center. A southern section of the road continues past Housekeeping Camp, Yosemite Conservation Heritage Center (formerly LeConte Memorial Lodge), Stoneman Bridge, Curry Village, which has parking, food services, and lodging, Lower Pines, Campground office, and Trailhead Parking. The road continues past the Happy Isles Art and Nature Center, which has restrooms, as it curls in a loop around Upper Pines, which has campgrounds, and past North Pines, which also has campgrounds. A note near the nature center reads, "Trailhead for Vernal Fall, Nevada Fall, and John Muir Trail.” A northern leg of this road crosses Sentinel Bridge and leads up to Visitor Parking and the Yosemite Valley Welcome Center. Several sites encircle the visitor center, including Yosemite Village, a museum, US Court, the Wilderness Center permit station, a medical clinic, picnic areas, and Village Store and Grill. A road north of the Visitor Center leads east from the Yosemite Village to arrive at The Ahwahnee, which has lodging and food services. Along Northside Drive Northside Drive departs from the visitor center to head west past a picnic area and restrooms, Lower Yosemite Fall Trail, Yosemite Valley Lodge, which has food services and lodging, and Visitor Parking. The road dips south and continues west past El Capitan, which has restrooms and picnic areas. A road connects Southside Drive and Northside Drive over El Capitan Bridge, which crosses the Merced River. Northside Drive continues to Valley View, which has restrooms, and turns to El Portal Road. The road splits near the left edge of the map. The northern branch has text reading “To Tioga Road, Tuolumne Meadows and Highway 120; and Hetch Hetchy.” The southern branch has text reading “To El Portal and Highway 140.” Shuttles The Valleywide Shuttle path, represented in green, makes a loop from the El Capitan Bridge, along the entire length of Southside Drive, around Upper Pines, and up past the Yosemite Valley Welcome Center. One arm continues east to The Ahwahnee and the other follows Northside Drive to connect with the Southside at El Capitan Bridge. The East Valley Shuttle, indicated in pink, creates a loop from Sentinel Bridge, just to the west of the welcome center, east along Southside Drive, around Upper Pines, back to the visitor center, Yosemite Village, and back to Sentinel Bridge. South of Southside Drive Now moving around the map again in the same order, the surrounding sites and features will be described west to east under Southside Drive and then east to west over Northside Drive, again following the flow of traffic. Bridalveil Fall is near Bridalveil Creek and Cathedral Rocks is near Cathedral Spires. Farther east, Glacier Point, which measures 7,214 feet (2,199 meters) and has restrooms and picnic areas, towers over the curve of Southside Drive. Sentinel Creek, Sentinel Fall, Staircase Falls, and Illilouette Fall fan out around the perimeter of Glacier Point. The Four Mile Trail zigzags from its trailhead and meets with a network of other trails across Glacier Point. Moving counterclockwise around Glacier Point are Moran Point and Union Point at 10 o’clock, Sentinel Dome, Taft Point, and Roosevelt Point at 8 o’clock, and Washburn Point at 6 o’clock. Glacier Park Road runs north from the bottom edge of the map. Red text reads, "Closed approx. November to May,” and brown text at the end of a leader line point to the Sentinel Dome/Taft Point Trailhead reads, "No vehicles over 30 ft and no trailers beyond this point.” The road curls up past Washburn Point and ends in a loop near the top of Glacier Point. The Merced River runs east to west, off the edge of the map, past Little Yosemite Valley, which has a ranger station (summer only); Nevada Fall; Vernal Fall; along the John Muir Trail; past the Happy Isles Art and Nature Center; through Yosemite Valley; and out to El Portal and Highway 140. The rightmost quarter of the map is taken up by Half Dome, which measures 8,836 feet (2,693 meters). A trail there has a note reading “Permit required to summit Half Dome.” North of Northside Drive A road branches off of the ending loop of Southside Drive, to the north of Upper Pines. Both the loop and that branch have a label reading “Road open ONLY to pedestrians, bicycles, and vehicles with wheelchair emblem placards.” This road leads to trails surrounding Mirror Lake, which is found at 4,094 feet (1,248 meters). Now moving from east to west over Northside Drive, Tenaya Creek flows from the northeast past Mirror Lake into the Merced River near North Pines. Continuing west are the Washington Column, North Dome, Royal Arches, Royal Arch Cascade, Royal Arch Creek, Indian Canyon Creek, Yosemite Point, Yosemite Creek, Upper Yosemite Fall, Lower Yosemite Fall, Yosemite Falls Trail, Lower Yosemite Fall Trail, and Columbia Rock, which is northwest of Yosemite Valley Lodge. The Three Brothers follows, which comprises Eagle Peak, Middle Brother, and Lower Brother, then Horsetail Fall, El Capitan (7,569 feet, 2,307 meters), Ribbon Creek, and Ribbon Fall. Legend A scale in the lower right corner of the map measures 0.5 kilometers and 0.5 miles. Text with the legend reads, “Park and Use the free Yosemite Valley Shuttle.” The legend reads as follows: Pink line with white circles for the stops for the East Valley Shuttle, Green line with diamond-shaped stops for the Valleywide Shuttle, A white P in a brown box for Visitor Parking, Dashed black line for the John Muir Trail, Dashed brown line for Other rail, and Brown line for Paved bikeway and foot trail. Finally, a column of symbols represent the Wilderness Permit station, Ranger stations, Food service and lodging, Restrooms, Picnic areas, and Campgrounds.
