Alt Text Map of Badlands National Park in South Dakota. The park is highlighted in green with surrounding terrain shown in light yellow, tan, pearl white, or pale peach. Red lines represent roads and yellow dots represent towns and cities. Extended Description Badlands National Park has a narrow irregular shape. The park comprises three parts. The North Unit is the northeast arm and backbone of the park. The Stronghold Unit is the lower arm, and the much smaller Palmer Creek Unit stands alone just east of the Stronghold Unit. The North UnitEntering the park near its easternmost edge, Badlands Loop Road goes through the Northeast Entrance, then passes Big Badlands Overlook and a site with restrooms before arriving at the Ben Reifel Visitor Center (Park Headquarters), which has a ranger station and picnic area and is at an elevation of 2,443 feet (745 meters). State Route 377 travels southwest from here to the Interior Entrance and the town of Interior to pass a campground. Cedar Pass Lodge, which is open seasonally, is on Badlands Loop Road/SR 420 immediately adjacent to the visitor center. The Badlands Loop Road then travels northwest from the visitor center to the first stop, which is Fossil Exhibit Trail with restrooms and a self-guiding trail. The area from the visitor center and Interior Entrance to Fossil Exhibit Trail is enclosed in a rectangle, and a note reads, “See Cedar Pass detail map above.” Within this area, Castle Trail and Medicine Root trail connect Badlands Loop Road to State Route 240 just north of where they intersect at the visitor center. Continuing along Badlands Loop Road are White River Valley Overlook, Big Foot Pass Overlook with a picnic area, Panorama Point, Prairie Wind Overlook, Burns Basin Overlook, Homestead Overlook, Conata Basin Overlook, Yellow Mounds Overlook, Ancient Hunters Overlook, and Pinnacles Overlook. County Road 509, also labeled Conata Road, branches south off the loop road just west of Yellow Mounds Overlook and passes the site of Conata, which has a picnic area, before exiting the park. The park road turns north after Pinnacles Overlook to reach the Pinnacles Entrance. The unpaved Sage Creek Rim Road continues the route westward through Badlands Wilderness Area, which is shaded pale yellow, to pass Hay Butte Overlook, Badlands Wilderness Overlook, Roberts Prairie Dog Town, Sage Creek Basin Overlook, and Sage Creek, which has a primitive campground and no water. The Stronghold and Palmer Creek Units The Stronghold Unit is mostly surrounded by the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Secondary Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) Route 27 travels into the southeast corner of this arm to access the White River Visitor Center, which is open seasonally and has a ranger station and picnic area. An unpaved road (high-clearance vehicles only) heads southwest to Sheep Mountain Table (3,282 feet 1000 meters) just north of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation border Moving east to west, features across this unit include Cedar Butte, Galigo Table, Stronghold Table, Plenty Star Table, Blindman Table, and Red Shirt Table Overlook, which is on the western border of the unit along BIA Route 41. The Palmer Creek Unit sits just east of Stronghold Unit across the White River from the visitor center in the Stronghold Unit and is entirely surrounded by the reservation. The unit is shaded in a dark yellow, indicating its status as a wilderness area, and amenities or points of interest are indicated within the unit. Around the Park Interstate 90 cuts across the top right corner of the map and passes through the town of Wall at Exit 110, followed by three sites labeled with green text. From west to east, these are Minuteman Missile National Historic Site Delta-9 on Exit 116, Minuteman Missile National Historic Site Delta-01 at Exit 127, and Minuteman Missile National Historic Site Visitor Center at Exit 131. Text above this area and under a label for Buffalo Gap National Grassland reads, “US Forest Service: The Grassland is interspersed with privately owned land. Check at the Grassland headquarters in Wall for details.” US Route 14 runs east-west north of Buffalo Gap National Grassland to intersect with Interstate 90 near Wall. State Route 240 heads south from Wall to the Pinnacles Entrance. State Route 44 cuts diagonally across the map from Rapid City to the northwest and Wanblee to the southeast. Country Road 589 heads south from SR 44 at Scenic to become Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) 27 which leads to the White River Visitor Center. BIA 27 continues south and BIA 33 branches off as both roads head south towards Wounded Knee. Route 2 runs west from the White River Visitor Center to intersect with BIA 41 running south to Oglala and north along the Badlands National Park’s western border to become SR 40. Legend A legend in the lower left corner reads as follows: Black line for Unpaved road (may be impassable when wet), Black thick dashed line for Unpaved road (high-clearance vehicles only), Yellow shading enclosed with a green line for Wilderness area, Black thin dashed line for Trail, and Red line with black half circle for Overlook. Two columns of symbols to the right represent Ranger station, Restrooms, Picnic area, Self-guiding trail, Campground, and Primitive campground.
