A small group of slaves carried bundles of wood into the Danish fort Frederiksvaern atop Fortsberg hill at Coral Bay on St John Island Concealed inside the bundles were cane bills, a type of short machete (the figure in the foreground is shown holding one) The illustration recreates the element of surprise when the slaves overpowered and killed the sentry and all but one of the six soldiers billeted in the fort Taking the fort, the slaves fired its cannons to signal that the revolt had begun
