The Watt House, a small middle-class plantation outside Richmond, Virginia's defense line, was just to the rear of Union General Fitz John Porter's headquarters during the Battle of Gaines' Mill in 1862.
General Porter ordered that 78 year old Sara Watt evacuate her home. After refusing to leave, field hands picked up Mrs. Watt in her sick bed, put her in a cart, and drove through the lines to safety.
