Aerial plan of Old San Juan from San Juan Bay as it appeared in the early 1790s
Founded in 1521, Old San Juan stands on the western end of a rugged, rocky islet that is bordered on the north by the Atlantic Ocean and on the south and west by a vast and graceful San Juan Bay. By the end of the 18th century, the walls and citadels of San Juan were spread out over more than 200 acres. Following principles codified in the Royal Ordinances of King Philip II of 1573, San Juan was laid out on a right-angled grid of six streets running from east to west and seven from north to south, organized around open squares or plazas.
