Alt Text Map of Palo Alto Battlefield National Historical Park in Texas. The Rio Grande separates the United States, shown in peach, from Mexico, shown in tan. Troop movements are indicated with sweeping arrows leading to and through three military events represented with starburst symbols. Extended Description Most of the sites and action takes place from north to south down the middle of the map, but one blue arrow, labeled Taylor, begins near Port Isabel to the east. The port is on the Laguna Madre, and South Bay, Laguna Larga, and Bahia Grande are nearby. Taylor moved west and turned south near modern-day Los Fresnos. A red line labeled Arista moves north from Matamoros, and the two meet on May 8, 1846, for the Battle of Palo Alto. This site has a Visitor Center at Palo Alto Battlefield National Historical Park. From here, another red line heads straight south as blue arrows arc shallowly to the west. The second Arista line travels along modern-day Paredes Line Road past the cross streets of Dr Hugh Emerson Road, Morrison Road, and Ruben M Torres Sr Boulevard. The next meeting is May 9, 1846, Battle of Resaca de la Palma at the Resaca de la Palm Battlefield. The second Arista line continues south past East Price Road, Boca Chica Boulevard, Palm Boulevard, through Brownsville, and past Sam Perl Boulevard and University Boulevard. The third and final clash is the Siege of Fort Brown, May 3-9, 184, and the red line continues south through Matamoros from there. Areas around these events include Los Fresnos to the north, Brownsville South Padre International Airport just east of the battles, and Olmito to the west. Several roads in Mexico are labeled, including Carretera Ciudad Río Bravo-Matamoros and Avenida Laura Villar, which roughly parallel the Mexico-US border. Legend A scale to the right measures distances of 5 kilometers and 5 miles.
