Extended Description This description will focus on the green park areas on the map and on the sites contained within them, moving from left to right. The oval-shaped Arlington National Cemetery and the Pentagon lie beyond the west bank of the Potomac River along the left edge of the map. The Arlington Memorial Bridge crosses the Potomac River and enters the cemetery as Memorial Drive. From the Potomac River and moving west, Memorial Drive passes the Arlington National Cemetery Visitor Center, which has information, a bookstore, restrooms, and parking. Memorial Drive ends in front of the Women in Military Service for America Memorial, which has information, a bookstore, and restrooms. Continuing west in the cemetery are the Arlington House (Robert E Lee Memorial), with information and restrooms, and the Memorial Amphitheater. The Netherlands Carillon and U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial), which has parking, are to the north, and the Columbarium is to the south. Outside the cemetery, the Arlington Gateway Park is near the Francis Scott Key Memorial Bridge to the north; Lady Bird Johnson Park and the Lyndon Baines Johnson Memorial Grave are to the east; and the Pentagon Memorial is to the south. The Georgetown Channel curves over Theodore Roosevelt Island, which is also the site of the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial, and the Little River wraps around the west side of the island. Lining the Potomac River to the north in Washington, DC, from north to south, are the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Historical Park, which has a Visitor Center in Georgetown; Georgetown Waterfront Park; and Rock Creek Park. The John F Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts is just north of the Lincoln Memorial and has information, bookstore, and restrooms. The Mall The Lincoln Memorial anchors the west end of the long, rectangular National Mall and Memorial Parks. The US Capitol is at the other end of the Mall, with the Washington Monument about a third of the way across from the Lincoln Memorial. Footpaths, represented in yellow, and dashed red lines indicating Circulator stops, intertwine as they wind through and around these spaces. A long Reflecting Pool nearly connects the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument. Lincoln Memorial amenities include information, guides, and restrooms. Moving from the Lincoln Memorial to the east are the following sites and visitor services: the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, restrooms, a refreshment stand, souvenir shop, and Constitution Gardens line the northern half of this strip. The Reflecting Pool stretches to the World War II Memorial, and a grassy area connects this with the Washington Monument, which has a bookstore, restrooms, and tickets at Monument Lodge. Moving west to east again on the south half of this area are a souvenir shop and refreshment stand, the Korean War Veterans Memorial, restrooms, and information. The Mall is lined along the northern half with the following: National Museum of African American History and Culture; National Museum of American History; two refreshment stands; National Museum of Natural History; the National Sculpture Garden, which has an ice skating rink and the National Gallery of Art’s West and East Buildings. West to east along the southern half of The Mall are the following: the Smithsonian Castle and S Dillon Ripley Center; information; two refreshment stands; Freer Gallery of Art; Sackler Gallery of Art; African Art Museum; Arts and Industries building; Hirshhorn Museum; National Air and Space Museum; National Museum of the American Indian; and US Botanic Garden. The Capitol Reflecting Pool curves in front of the US Capitol at the east end of this central green area. Immediately east of the pool is the Ulysses S Grant Memorial. President’s Park Ellipse and the White House sit in a rectangular arm stretching north from the Washington Monument. To the south of the monument, the Tidal Basin is almost completely surrounded by West Potomac and East Potomac Parks, which are connected by a short bridge. In West Potomac Park are the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial and Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial, which has information, a bookstore, and restrooms. The Thomas Jefferson Memorial, with each have information, restrooms, a bookstore, and souvenir shop, is on the north bank of East Potomac Park. Hundreds of roads, buildings, Metro stations, Capital Bikeshare locations, and other sites are labeled to all sides of The Mall.
