Alt Text Map of Saratoga National Historical Park in New York. The park area, shown in green, is shaped like a blocky letter E. West of the Hudson, the park touches the riverbank at two points. The map shows roads around and through the park, including the self-guiding park tour, as well as paths and trails. Extended Description This description will start by identifying the main roads around the park, then will go into the park’s northwest entrance to briefly note the general layout, then will follow the tour road, noting sites, monuments, trails, and other park features along the way. It will end with a full transcription of the legend. Roads Four main roads, shown as red lines, overlap the park in a rhombus-like shape. US Highway 4 goes south to northeast, cutting through and passing by the park’s eastern edges. At the bottom of the map, text next to this highway reads, “To Stillwater and Albany, 30 miles (46 kilometers).” At the top of the map, text by this highway reads, “To Schuyler House, Saratoga Monument, Surrender Site, and Victory Woods, in Schuylerville and Victory, 8 miles (13 kilometers).” State Route 32, also known as State Route 423, connects from the lower end of US Highway 4, cutting across the park’s southwest corner and going over to the map’s left edge, where it links up with State Route 32 and becomes State Route 423. An arrow points left from here and text reads, “To Malta and exit 12, Interstate 87.” State Route 32 heads northeast, scraping the park’s northwestern edge and going off the map’s top edge. An arrow pointing up with text here reads, “To Schuylerville and Victory, 8 miles (13 kilometers).” Just outside the park’s entrance, Lohnes Road runs laterally across the park’s top edge, and eventually leads into the park to meet the park’s entrance road. Phillips Road also comes down from the north to meet the park entrance road. It is known as Duell Road after crossing Wilbur Road, which intersects further up with US Highway 4. Park State Route 32 leads into the park, connecting to the park entrance road. Here are Restrooms, the Visitor Center, and a Picnic Area. The park entrance road continues east, close to the park’s top border, then dips down near the Great Ravine and links up with US Highway 4 near the park’s easternmost edge. Wilkinson National Recreation Trail, shown as a black dashed line, begins at the Visitor Center and zigzags east, then creates a large loop circling around the top middle of the park. The trail intersects with several other paths and trails, including Liaison Trail going south. Park Tour Beginning at the Visitor Center, the park tour road is shown in yellow, winding south toward the park’s bottom, where the American Camp was located, then rounding back up to the park’s top area, winding east over to the British Camp, and stopping near the Great Ravine and the point where the park entrance road meets Phillips Road. This one-way tour has 10 stops and pullout points, named as follows, with nearby park features noted: “War Is Coming.” Near here is a service road or bike shortcut, which skips the southern loop and brings you to the tour road halfway between Stops 5 and 6. Halfway between Stop 1 and Stop 2 is Morgan Monument. “Neilson’s Farm.” Here are Restrooms (no water), Monument to the Unknown American Dead, Kosciuszko Monument, as well as Neilson House. The road is now in the American Camp, slightly north of State Routes 32 and 423. Below those roads is Gates’ headquarters site and an American hospital site. “Bemus Heights.” Trails connect at this site, in American Camp and just west of US Highway 4. At the park’s bottom right corner, just above where State Routes 32 and 423 meet with US Highway 4, is the Bemus Tavern site. “Path to War.” The trail connects to this point and continues north to the Middle Ravine, from which point the trail heads west toward Murphy Monument and Stop 5, while another trail branch continues north toward Stop 6. “The Tide Turns.” Wheatfield. Fraser Monument is here. “Freeman’s Farm.” Light Infantry Redoubt. The Freeman House site is here, which connects with Liaison Trail. “The Decisive Moment.” Breymann’s Camp. Just before this stop is Arnold Monument. Here is a Picnic Area and Restrooms (no water). From here we head west. “Behind British Lines.” Burgoyne’s Headquarters. “Loss and Victory.” Great Redoubt. Here is the British hospital site and a Picnic Area, as well as trails and paths leading up the park’s easternmost edge, passing the Tayler House site, and continuing north out of the park. “Return to Saratoga.” The road heads east from here, leading to the park entrance road near its interaction with Phillips Road. Legend Located in the map’s bottom left corner, the legend contains symbols for Picnic Areas and Restrooms, as well as the following features: Green dashed line for paths and trails, Black dashed line for Wilkinson National Recreation Trail, Yellow line with black half-circle for park tour road and pullout.
