Alt Text Map of Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona with recreation areas and preserves to the west in Nevada and parks to the north in Utah. Extended Description Grand Canyon National Park is darker green than the surrounding protected areas, which are sand brown. The Colorado River, which runs across the width of the map, and other bodies of water are blue; the Navajo Reservation to the east is dark beige; and the outer regions of the map are lighter tan. This description will begin with the features of Grand Canyon and neighboring areas and sites in Arizona before moving east to Nevada and then north to Utah and the sites there. The locations of cities and more information about the network of roads will follow. Grand Canyon and Arizona The Colorado River curves like a shallow, lowercase w across Arizona before angling sharply north near the right edge of the map. The sites of North Rim, Grand Canyon Village, and Desert View make a lopsided triangle near the right edge of the main body of the park. The Navajo Nation Reservation borders Grand Canyon to the east. The following sites line or are near the northern rim of Grand Canyon National Park from west to east: Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument, Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni Grand Canyon National Monument, Pipe Spring National Monument, Kaibab-Paiute Reservation, Jacob Lake, and Vermilion Cliffs National Monument. The following sites line or are near Grand Canyon to the south, also from west to east: the Hualapai Indian Reservation, Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument, Walnut Canyon National Monument, and Wupatki National Monument. Nevada and Points West Lake Mead National Recreation Area neighbors the western tip of Grand Canyon just over the border with Nevada. The recreation area stretches south and adjoins Avi Kwa Ame National Monument at the southern tip of Nevada and the Mohave National Preserve in California, which edges into the lower left corner of the map. Las Vegas is northwest of the Lake Mead National Recreation Area, and north of Las Vegas is Tule Springs Fossil Beds National Monument. Utah and Points North From west to east in Utah are Zion National Park, Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, and Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. Cities and Roads Represented with a red line, Interstate 15 begins near the lower left corner of the map and runs northeast, through Las Vegas, across the northwest corner of Arizona, and up into Utah past St. George and “To Salt Lake City.” Interstate 40 runs east-west across most of the width near the bottom edge of the map, past Kingman, Seligman, Williams, and Flagstaff. A road represented in white encased in dark yellow runs north from the North Rim to Jacob Lake as State Route 67. It turns east at Jacob Lake as US Route ALT 89. It nearly reaches a town called Page before turning south and then turning west again as State Route 64 to pass Desert View and end at Grand Canyon Village. The much shorter Interstate 11 extends southeast from Las Vegas toward Boulder City. Other State Routes represented with white lines connect and interconnect in a network around most of the perimeter of the map. Legend A scale in the upper left corner of the map measures 50 kilometers and 50 miles.
