Extended Description The park area is shaped like a boxy capital letter L. The narrow north edge nearly reaches the John Lewis Freedom Parkway and the southern border extends beyond Edgewood Avenue. Jackson Street stretches up the west side, and the east side steps in and out along the L shape. Starting at the top of the park, the first block includes the Martin Luther King, Jr. Branch Library (Atlanta-Fulton County Public Library System), visitor parking, and bus parking. The Freedom Park Trail extends from the parking area north to travel east along the John Lewis Freedom Parkway. Text next to the trail reads, “National Historical Park to Carter Center, 1.5 miles (2.4 kilometers).” The David T. Howard School, Dr. King’s Elementary School, is two blocks east of the library. Between Irwin Street and Auburn Avenue, the next block south has a Promenade, National Park Service Visitor Center, Peace Plaza, and Ebenezer Baptist Horizon Sanctuary. Prince Hall Masonic Building is two blocks west of the Historic Ebenezer Baptist Church and Jackson street. The masonic building is at 332-334 Auburn Avenue and a note that follows reads, “First national headquarters (1957) for Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC).” The southernmost band of the park is two blocks wide. Moving from west to east between Auburn Avenue and Edgewood Avenue to the south are the Historic Ebenezer Baptist Church Heritage Sanctuary, The King Center which includes Dr. and Mrs. King’s Tomb and the Eternal Flame, and Freedom Hall. In the next block is a Historic Residential Area north of Auburn Avenue and hemmed on the far side by Old Wheat Street. Again moving west to east between Auburn and Edgewood avenues are the Historic Fire Station Number 6, the Eastern National Bookstore and Museum Shop, and the King Birth Home at 501 Auburn Avenue. All of the named buildings are shown in vivid green except the library and Ebenezer Baptist Church Horizon Sanctuary, which are olive green. Unlabeled buildings along the residential area and others are olive green as well. Following Jackson Street south, the King Memorial MARTA Station is about 1 mile beyond the bottom edge of this map. Boulevard continues south and eventually “To Oakland Cemetery, Interstate 20, Zoo Atlanta, and South-View Cemetery.” Legend A scale in the lower right corner measures distances of 20 and 100 meters and 100 and 500 feet.
