Extended Description Ellis Island is shaped like a blocky U with the Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration sitting on the east side of the island that faces Manhattan. The museum has a large main building, capped with four short spires, and smaller buildings attached to the main structure. Only the main building and a small portion of one side building are open to the public. In front of the museum is a walkway that leads from its entrance to the Ferry Dock. Behind the museum is Fort Gibson and the American Immigrant Wall of Honor, a circular monument. On the north side of the island that faces New Jersey is the Ferry Building, which is not open to the public. The west side of the island faces Liberty Island and has several walkways and smaller buildings, including Hospital Buildings and Contagious Disease Wards, which are also not open to the public.
