Alt Text Map of Walnut Canyon National Monument in Arizona showing the canyon’s topography, visitor center, trails, ruins, and the Coconino National Forest to the north. Extended Description Walnut Canyon National Monument is roughly rectangular with deeply stepped sides and an arm angling northeast along the right edge of this map. The red access road is flanked in green, and it leads down to the northern edge of the park and the Visitor Center there, which is at an elevation of 6,690 feet (2,039 meters). The Pueblo and Pithouse Ruins, the beginning of the Rim and Island trails, and a picnic area are nearby. A red line that ends in a loop at the Visitor Center leads up to text reading “Visitor Center to exit 204, Interstate 40: 3 miles (5 kilometers); Visitor Center to downtown Flagstaff: 10 miles (16 kilometers).” Cliff dwelling ruins are marked in dark green dashes that curve alongside the two trails. Walnut Creek is represented with a blue dashed line that snakes around the Visitor Center, trails, and ruins. The creek continues through the middle of the park, curving and branching off to form thin veins throughout the canyon. Toward the southeast region of the map and along the snaking Walnut Creek are the series of connecting topographical indentations of Walnut Canyon. Cherry Canyon is in the southeasternmost corner of the map. An inset map at the top right corner of the main map shows a more distant view of Walnut Canyon National Monument. The outlines, red roads, dashed blue lines, and Visitor Center are replicated. It also includes Interstate 40, which is a darker red line across the top of the inset map. Legend A scale in the lower left corner of the main map measures distances of 0.1 and 0.5 kilometers and 0.1 and 0.5 miles. A note follows: Island Trail, a 0.9-mile (1.5-kilometer) round-trip paved interpretive trail, requires a climb of 185 feet (56 meters) via 240 steps. A legend to the right of the scale includes symbols for the following: Black dashed line for a trail, Black dashed line with a black semi circle for overlooks, and Green dashes for cliff dwelling ruins.
