Alt Text The globe, flattened and oblong, presenting a map of The Pacific Ocean circa 1941, the bodies of water light blue, the continents in natural shades of green and brown, the International Dateline dividing it in half east-west, bringing attention to the Territory of Hawaiʻi, near the center. Extended Description Text near the bottom of the globe reads, “The Pacific Ocean in 1941.” This globe encompasses the eastern hemisphere from landlocked Mongolia at the far west, across the ocean and North America, to the Atlantic Ocean at the far east. The International Dateline divides it in half longitudinally and the Equator latitudinally, both indicated in blue. These two lines divide the globe into quadrants, which we will explore clockwise and one-by-one starting at the northeast. The Northeast Quadrant At the far north is the Territory of Alaska and Dutch Harbor on the Aleutian Islands. Canada lies east and south of Canada is the United States. Five cities are labeled in the United States: Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego on the west coast and Washington, DC on the east coast. Mexico and Panama Canal are also labeled in this quadrant. The Territory of Hawaiʻi is at the center of the Pacific Ocean close to the International Dateline. Pearl Harbor and Midway are labeled. The Southeast Quadrant The Galapagos Islands are noted near the Equator off the coast of South and Central America. Samoa is just east of the International Dateline, and Tahiti is farther east. The Southwest Quadrant Australia is the significant landmass in the southwest quadrant. Sydney, Femantel, and Darwin are labeled, and New Zealand, New Caledonia, and Fiji are labeled off the east coast. North of Australia and close to the Equator are the Netherlands East Indies, the town of Rabaul on New Guinea, and the Solomon Islands. The Gilbert Islands span the equator near the International Dateline. The Northwest Quadrant Countries on the Asian continent from the top down are the USSR, Mongolia, Manchuria, Korea, China, India, Burma, Thailand, and French Indochina. Peking, Shanghai, and Hong Kong are labeled in China. Japan stretches along the coastline, and Tokyo, Hiroshima, and Nagasaki are labeled. Working eastward islands include Okinawa, Formosa, Iwo Jima, Manila in the Philippines, Singapore, Tinian, Saipan, Guam, Palau, Marshall Island, and Wake. Legend A scale along the bottom of the globe measures distances of 1,000 and 2,000 kilometers and 1,000 and 2,000 miles. A note below reads "Equatorial scale.”
