This photograph depicts Richard Gomar (also referred to as Richard Gomer and Richard Gomes), wearing the membership badge of the Grand Army of the Republic, circa 1880. Gomar served as a Private within Company H. of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment, the first black regiment raised in the North during the Civil War.
