A waist up portrait of a man wearing a coat and a waistcoat, buttoned up. Shirt is a "dog collar" style. Man has a moustache and has a GAR medal pinned to his right breast on his waistcoat. The GAR medal features an eagle at the top, ribbon extending down, and a 5 pointed star hanging from ribbon.

This photograph depicts Richard Gomar (also referred to as Richard Gomer and Richard Gomes), wearing the membership badge of the Grand Army of the Republic, circa 1880. Gomar served as a Private within Company H. of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment, the first black regiment raised in the North during the Civil War.
