Preparing Sediment Cores: After the sediment cores are removed, they are carefully cut into sections, wrapped, labeled, and packed for transport back to the lab. The cores were 11 meters and 4 meters in length. Carbon dating techniques on the charcoal fragments indicate the longer core represented 3,100 years of time, while the shorter core represented 7,000 years of time. The length of the core is not necessarily related to time. It reflects how much runoff and erosion occurred in the two places.
