Frances (Appleton) Longfellow to Emmeline (Austin) Wadsworth, 28 April 1846
Manuscript letter
Tuesday morning.
Dearest Em,
I intended to come in & see you today, but have been waiting in vain for the carriage from town, & did not venture upon the omnibus with my cold. I wanted to tell you that I shall expect you on Thursday, & that you can hear Mr Everett comfortably with me if you like, as each Professor has seats reserved for two ladies. You must, therefore, be here by 10 o’clock, or at latest, half past, as we must go punctually at eleven.
I also wanted you to give me the benefit of your ad [p. 2] vice about a bonnet (I wish you had one to lend me!) as mine are really too shabby for such an occasion, Miss Spear disappointing me so provokingly about my Leghorn. Perhaps she may have something ready made I can take, though it is rather early for a summer hat – I must try to get in tomorrow & see, but write you meanwhile about Thursday, in case I should not be able. I have not yet got a chambermaid, but mine will stay over Thursday & we will, at any rate, continue to manage – I shall be charmed to have you here my darling [p. 3] of darlings - & wish it could be for a month.
I regret that I cannot send you Mrs Tracy’s money, but some extra bills have come in, & we cannot muster than much in our respective purses! She has so many friends that my conscience is not as disturbed as if it were some poor bedridden creature It is very provoking to have one’s funds run low, but so they will do where one only receives money at certain long intervals. At home I have used to feel as if I had Fortunatus’ purse, & spend somewhat accordingly, but I have now, of course, to learn prudence, tho’ temptation often steps in to vanquish my economy.
Enough of this –
ever thy loving
Fan.
[p. 1 cross] Do not think any one has a better claim to my extra seat. Harriet said she did not wish to go - & Aunt Mattie is not well eno’.
