The patriots defeated a larger force of loyalists in a brief, but violent clash at daybreak on February 27, 1776 at the bridge during the Battle of Moores Creek Bridge. The victory ended royal authority in the North Carolina colony, helped forestall a full-scale invasion of the South, and encouraged North Carolina on April 12, 1776 to instruct its delegation to the Continental Congress in Philadelphia to vote for independence, the first colony to so act.
