United Daughters of the Confederacy
1800 Harris Road

Dear Mrs. Smith:
I understand from Miss Franklin that you are very busy at this time of year – therefore I am reporting to you that our figure of the Confederate soldier is very close to completion. It is at the present time all finished except the flag and a little on the base which I think will be completed in another two weeks or so. Therefore it will be a good idea for you to set up a date for a visit by yourself and your committee – and anyone else that you would care to invite to see the statue.
I am closing copy of a letter to Mr. Wing. As Judge Beard does not live too far away perhaps he could come in at any time and give you a preliminary report, if you would care for it.
I am most sorry to say that a dedication this fall is now completely out of question as the delays and matters beyond my control did not permit me to award the contract for the granite base until I received the letter of approval August 11th from Mr. Wing. This meant that the granite could not be finished this fall and will be delivered in the spring of 1965. The great delays brought about by Mrs. Kibler and the delay at Gettysburg have made this hope of a fall dedication impossible.
Since the dedication now must be spring or early summer it would be nice to have it when the weather is pleasant – such as early June. I have been present at many dedications in April and May that were unpleasant – raining and cold – and it took the edge off the ceremony.
The figure has come along very well and I believe it is one of the best things I have done. Mr. Bryant Baker has seen it and thinks it very fine – he said he had been given bad reports of it by Mrs. Kibler and others and was pleasantly surprised.
Please let me hear from you as to the date – and remember me to Mr. Smith.
Very sincerely yours,
Donald DeLue
