Canoe Sail Toggle
The use of sails in birch bark canoes is depicted in Frances Anne Hopkins' 1869 painting entitled "Voyageurs on Lake Superior" and is mentioned in the journals of fur traders. They were often rigged with lines affixed to a toggle such as the double cone-shaped style exhibited here. This toggle is 10.3 cm long with a maximum diameter of 2.9 cm.
