Plains Cottonwood
A single cottonwood tree in an open meadow with ponderosa pine trees in the background.
Imagine walking across the dry plains that surround the Black Hills. In the distance you might see a tall tree that seems to shimmer. That shimmer is created by shiny cottonwood leaves rustling in the wind. Your group would start heading toward the cottonwood immediately. The cottonwood provides shade may indicate water is nearby, too. Cottonwoods grow best in moist soils and are most often found along rivers and streams. These trees have long been a beacon of water on the plains. Cottonwoods are also known for their sweet taste, with the green fruits being eaten like candy. The inner bark can be eaten as well and the seeds make a yellow dye.
