Lowndesboro School (Lowndesboro, Alabama)
Outdoor photograph with gray skies, trees, and green grass. In the background, a white frame church surrounded by a white fence; in the foreground, a large sign.
The Lowndesboro School was built in 1883 to educate the children of newly freed enslaved peoples after emancipation. With no electricity or running water, it came into significant disrepair over the years yet continued to serve as the local school for Black children until 1967. In 1967, the school was decommissioned and later served a variety of functions. This African American Civil Rights Grant project will make the school structure safe and accessible by repairing the foundation, making the structure fully ADA compliant, and installing bathrooms. The restored building will be developed into a tourist and community center to add Black educational history to the civil and voting rights archives and markers currently located in the Black Belt.
