myself now, and be stronger when it is time to come next Spring, perhaps between April 15 and June 15 (based entirely on the weather). In thinking it over, we have not set a definite date for the dedication ceremonies; however, it was Col. Avendano’s suggestion that for the sake of the military, regarding the Washington Artillery, which would be at Ft. Chaffe just prior to June 11, that date could not be given some thought. (We should have said units of the National Guard would be at Ft. Chaffe)
It is not my prerogative to set the date without the consent of Mr. Gibson, Miss Gregory, and all the Commission, but this is what was mentioned yesterday as an appropriate time for the National Guard, or units from the Washington Artillery, who would be on a training mission.
We have tentatively set up the program much like the one you sent which was done by the George Dedication Program Committee, September 20, 1961, a copy of which was sent to me from you at the request of Miss Gregory. I have studied it carefully and will return it to you as soon as I have decided which parts might well be used by us. Before going any further with my work with Col. Avendano, I must have your approval and I think you would be more than pleased, as he is a man of great knowledge and influence in Louisiana. I am taking the liberty of clipping the letterhead from this stationary in order that you might know who is in on the Board. This will give you an idea of it would mean, not only to Louisiana, and the Washington Artillery, but to many of the men only to Louisiana, and the Washington Artillery who are from all parts of the nation, both North and South, and surely we would show no preference.
Cordially,
[Signed]
(Mrs.) Clarence R. Letteer, Chairman
Louisiana Gettysburg Memorial Commission
