Fort Ethan Allen, Arlington Line, Virginia
Fort Ethan Allen, Arlington Line, Virginia
Battery M, 2nd New York Heavy Artillery, at Fort Ethan Allen, August 1865. General John G. Barnard described the work as such: “The two works at the Chain Bridge, viz, Forts Marcy and Ethan Allen, form no part of the defenses of Washington, strictly speaking, but are of the utmost importance as a tête-de-pont to the Chain Bridge, over which it is indispensable to secure a debouche. The position is strong and well occupied. The lines of rifle-trenches, which connect the works with each other and with the banks of the river, afford, with the auxiliary batteries, full view and defense of the numerous ravines, and give all the artificial strength which the position needs. The heights from which the works can be commanded, and the ap proaches to them, are under the fire of the heavy guns of Batteries Cameron, Parrott, Kemble, Vermont, and of Forts Alexander and Franklin. Fort Ethan Allen was named after General Ethan Allen of Revolutionary War fame.
