Black-crowned night heron, Arches National Park, 2015.
The black-crowned night heron (Nycticorax nycticorax) is found throughout most of the world, except in the coldest regions as well as Australasia where it's been replaced by a relative, the rufous night heron (Nycticorax caledonicus). These stout little birds still at the water's edge, waiting to ambush their prey.
