Vice President becoming President, Harry S Truman National Historic Site, 1945.
On April 12, 1945, Harry Truman, the then-Vice President of the United States had planned to play poker with a friend, Ed McKim, but ended up taking the oath of office to become President instead. Around 5pm the Vice President, Harry S Truman, was summoned to the White House where the First Lady, Eleanor Roosevelt, broke the news to him. Eleanor: "Harry, the president is dead." Harry: "Is there anything I can do for you?" Eleanor: "Is there anything we can do for you, for you are the one in trouble now." Just an hour and 39 minutes later, after dignitaries, the Chief Justice and Truman's wife and daughter assembled in the Cabinet Room of the White House, Harry S Truman became the President of the United States. Later that evening Truman was on the phone with his poker buddy and said, "I guess the party is off."
