Frances (Appleton) Longfellow to Nathan Appleton, 31 March 1857
Manuscript letter
Dear papa,
I send you Huc’s second volume which I hope you will find as interesting as I did. Strange people, of some great ideas, but all dwarfed by little ones – every thing in their characters as discordant & own of drawing as their china landscapes. They [p. 2] seem quite out of the fate of common humanity, like creatures of the moon, or some strange planet, - so ancient and so wise and yet so slow in growing wiser!
My influenza hangs on & keeps me from Mrs Paiges tonight, much to my regret. Edie & baby have both been wretched with it. How is Harriot? I hope she is relieved from her dull twilight.
[p. 3] In regard to Tom’s sleigh would it not be better to leave it in town, as he will use it there? We have no such good & safe place as yours.
This is his birth-day by the way. I must drink it in water.
Yrs ever
Fanny.
