Hartwell Tavern kitchen
360 panoramic image of a long, narrow colonial room. The ceiling and walls are white with a sea green trim. The floor is unpainted. There is a large brick hearth set into the wall on the right with an oven on the side. Long tables line the back wall. Two small rooms are visible at either end.
The kitchen was the beating heart of the house. Food preparation would happen in the large hearth, as well as other activities such as spinning. There are two service room on either side of the kitchen: a pantry and a buttery (which may also have served as a tap room for the tavern for a little while). As was common in colonial houses, the kitchen is located at the back of the house on the north side. The low ceiling helps keep heat in, and provides for more useable space in the loft above, constrained by the low, sloping roof.
