The east side of Zion is around 1,500 feet higher than Zion Canyon, resulting in cooler temperatures and greater snowfall. Plants on the east side are well adapted to these conditions, such as the ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa), which must survive both freezing temperatures in the winter and scorching heat in the summer.
