Photograph of Fort Pickens road covered in sand, cracked, and damaged from a storm.
The Fort Pickens Road on Santa Rosa Island has been repeatedly damaged by storms. Flood waters can scour material from beneath the road, causing the road to collapse and break apart. Flood waters also may
cause the top layers of asphalt to peel off. Asphalt debris ranges in size from large chunks to black grains mixed into white sands.
